Where Flourishing Teams Turn Shared Purpose
into Optimal Performance
Flourishing teams outperform benchmarks because they are at the top of their game,
and they change it forever.
“We didn’t just shift our metrics, we co-created a shared purpose and authentic participation.
Everything transformed. We unlocked our team’s deeper collective identity and the capability
to flow as one, adapt, contribute where it matters, and grow into something greater, together.
We became the team we were meant to be.”
Flourishing Teams Case — Home Base & High Freedom:
A Producer–Director Re-founds Her Film Family
For Siena, a producer-director and co-owner of a small documentary house, the pivot was mid-stream. What began as a feature-length documentary was suddenly to be adapted to a six-episode scripted series. “We’re totally editing now because all this stuff that we have filmed,” even though the cut now required pre-production thinking to script a series, with reshooting and arc decisions, all while the production team was supposed to be in post-production editing and finishing. With terabytes of footage, unfinished arcs, and a young crew, she re-founded her team and studio as a film family with a home base. Siena’s intention for the team was clear and generous. Keep creative freedom alive together. “To bring out the potential of the scripted episodes,” she said, “I wanted the crew to create the series by allowing freedom to be as creative as possible collaboratively,” stretching her arms wide to show the scope of what could happen “if the crew can achieve creative freedom.” Freedom in her studio is made possible by shared preparation and trust. Before shoots, she made sure “we’ve had pre-production meetings.” Then, on set, Siena, trusting in their preparations as a crew, she’d say, “okay, go film what you think… lots of freedom!” Newer team members “not so ingrained in the system” found it different at first. “It takes them a little bit to…flip that switch,” but once it does, they’re off with, “okay see ya, bye… it’s great.” This is how she converts anxiety into agency. Freedom with mutual understandings and connection. A crew identity pivot tightened roles without shrinking voices. Before they were a film being on set fluidly filming footage. Now the crew “won’t be as fluid… now we are non-fluid. We are becoming more together,” she said, forming and directing a core Editor, AD [Assistant Director], and DP [Director of Photography] post-production crew. Sieana broke away from her partners to step fully into producer–director ownership of the series. Siena practiced and exemplified safe, supportive, collaborative creative crew interdependence. She was reflexive and acted on what the editor said when checking in with her about the support she needed to be at her best. “Just keep doing what you’re doing” came back and solidified her her role. “The lifting piece is my opportunity to lift up and support [the editor] while [she’s] in the editing trenches.” The team’s identity caught up to the work. They discovered they were all they needed on a team to create finish the series. “Now with our new AD, DP, and amazing Editor, it’s just us!” “Home base” isn’t a metaphor for Siena, it’s how she holds the film family. Cast and crew send moments from the field. “It’s so fun!” to Siena, especially when she has a chance to amplify them. “Then I am like the mom, ‘Oh my gosh! Look at them!’ Then, I send the pictures to everybody else on the team… That role naturally fits for me. I love being that home base for people.” In the middle of industry churn, she chooses to nurture and provide. The film-to-series pivot demanded decisions. Siena made them with care. She welcomed younger crew “not so ingrained in the system…who want to take off,” and articulated their new purpose. After years in an open-ended capture mode, the series required specific shot lists for series story arcs and episode choices, historically proven post-production roles and processes that “brings us together” because they work and lets everyone see her “as a director” dedicated as a member of the crew co-creating a creative piece, not just scheduler and fixer. She sat at the table with the whole crew and cast to gather, one house, one conversation, one collective direction. By naming who she is, a producer–director–owner who operates as home base, and by cultivating high freedom inside clear agreements, she moved the team from fluid to focused without losing the spark that started the film. The practical outcome is a studio that adapts formats quickly, holds a cohesive core crew for scripted work, and keeps a wide circle of contributors feeling at home and proud to belong. Or, as Siena coined the new center of gravity, “It’s just us.” Call to Action: If you’re steering a content or product team through a hard pivot, new format, new scale, new market, we’ll help you discover how to re-create a creative crew as Siena did. In her case, by creating a home base for the crew, freedom, developing a core crew fast so your people can bring their best and still recognize themselves when they go home.
